Gary Pointer is a 1st year Counter Fraud and Criminal Justice Studies student who won February Course Rep of the Month. Gary spoke to us about being a Course Rep.

Why did you become a Course Rep?

I became a Rep as I thought that I could do some good and assist my fellow students.  Being a distance learner has been cited as lonely and remote, and I know it is disconcerting when you don’t have face-to-face access to help.  I hoped that by participating I could alleviate some of these.

How did you feel about winning the award?

I was absolutely humbled when I was notified that I had won as I was unaware that I had even been nominated.  Knowing that someone felt that my work was even worthy, let alone winning, makes it all feel even better.

What has been the biggest thing you have achieved for other students? How has this helped them and improved your course?

I think my biggest achievement for the other students is the acknowledgement that they know that they are not alone.  Regardless of their location, they have access to a voice and help, whatever their issue may be.  It can be something as simple as knowing that someone else is struggling with IT, that someone else is facing a race to get the submission in on time, or simply that someone else is available for those queries which you think are just a little bit daft.  I receive comments and support from all over the country (and abroad) where a post I have made has helped.  It is very rewarding.

Why did you pick your course?

I picked this course as I enjoy learning and work in this field.  Having the opportunity to think about fraud one Unit, forensic examinations the next and then criminology makes for a unique overall experience.  I intend to use this course to supplement my knowledge and hopefully lead to bigger things.

What is the best thing about your course?

The best thing about the course, other than the support, is being able to plan my studies around a set programme.  Being a distance learner and holding down a full-time job alongside family commitments makes this method of study a lot easier to manage.  I know when my assignment is due and how much work I have to complete.  I can binge on reading as and when I have time, factoring in my other commitments easily.

What are you spending your voucher on?

I’m not entirely sure what I will spend the voucher on but think it will probably end up being used in coffee pods for the next last-minute rush to get an assignment completed.
